Captive Attitude or One Bad-Arsed PelicanThe photo was taken at the St. Petersburg Pier. I was there to shoot the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavor on 16 May 2011. Unfortunately, the cloud cover prevented me from capturing the launch. Afterwards, I spent my time photographing the area and one of my favorite subjects, the pelicans! At the St Petersburg Pier, pelicans are used to people. There is a feeding area where you can pay five dollars for five fish, climb the stand and drop them into the open beaks. Fishermen have learned to watch their bait and the fish they catch. The pelicans, egrets and herons are all watching for you to slip or become complacent. They are not shy and do get close to you. If you turn and leave the bait uncovered, they will pinch it! Having observed pelicans up close, I know they keep a keen eye on you. As they watch you, this can translate into attitude , which is exactly what attracted my interest with this particular pelican. I must say that everyone seems to think the eagle looks bold. Well, they haven't observed these pelicans in "Da Burg" of St. Petersburg! One of my twitter favorites, @LadyNole7, stated, this is "Captured Attitude!" I also see the picture being used by environmentalist with the caption "Florida BELONGS to us!" The other caption "Don't Mess With Florida" is a take on the Texas slogan! Below is the original photograph. This is full of color and uses downtown St Petersburg and the cloudy sky as the backdrop. However, I saw this pelican's attitude and knew black and white was best to capture his stare, rather "Attitude."
